Mental Health First Aid Classes held in Newcastle!

The Standard MHFA course teaches adults (18 years and over) how to provide initial support to adults who are experiencing or developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis.
This course may be beneficial to Emergency Services personnel, Teachers, Nurses, Case Managers as well as family members and carers.

Developing mental health problems covered:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Substance misuse

Mental health crises covered:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Acute effects from alcohol or other drug misuse
  • Aggressive behaviours

Who can attend a course?

  • Any interested adult can attend. Please note this course is not a therapy or support group, rather it is an education course to learn how to give first aid to others.

Claim CPD Points:

  • Most professionals can claim attendance at a MHFA course for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) with their industry body.

The Standard Mental Health First Aid Course has been endorsed for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points for a number of professions including: nursing (i.e., midwives, mental health, practice nurses), pharmacy, fitness, chiropractic, and physiotherapy. In addition, for the following professionals, if a participant can link a relevant CPD learning goal to the Mental Health First Aid course, attendance can be claimed as CPD by: psychologists, social workers, teacher, dieticians, speech pathologists, audiologists/audiometrists and lawyers in some states and territories of Australia.You should also check directly with the body you are a member of for more information.

  • An additional $30 is payable to the Tutor on the 1st day for SMHFA Manual & Certificate.

WEA Hunter offers a wide variety of Lifestyle & Leisure courses at various locations throughout Newcastle and the Hunter Region.
Course enrolment must be accompanied by a fee; we are unable to hold places for people or accept deposits on Lifestyle courses. Once enrolment is completed students will receive a course confirmation either in writing or by email. This course confirmation constitutes a receipt.

Please check your confirmation letter to ensure you have the correct time, date and location of your course as well as any necessary requirements. There is a room directory located at each venue directing you to your classroom. Vending machines are located at both Laman & King street venues and parking fees will apply.
